When it comes to comfort food, few dishes can rival the rich, hearty flavors of an authentic Italian lasagna. Layers of tender pasta, savory meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and melted cheese come together to create a dish that’s perfect for family dinners, special occasions, or simply when you’re craving a taste of Italy. Follow this traditional recipe to make a lasagna that will have everyone coming back for seconds.

Ingredients:

For the Meat Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 500g (1 lb) ground pork
  • 800g (28 oz) canned crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

For the Béchamel Sauce:

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups whole milk, warmed
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

For Assembling:

  • 12-15 lasagna noodles, cooked according to package instructions
  • 250g (9 oz) ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 250g (9 oz) mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 100g (3.5 oz) Parmesan cheese, grated
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

Making the Meat Sauce:

  1. Sauté Aromatics and Meat:
    • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  2. Cook the Meat:
    • Add the ground beef and ground pork to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spoon, until browned and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Simmer the Sauce:
    • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let the sauce cook gently for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Making the Béchamel Sauce:

  1. Prepare the Roux:
    • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk constantly until the mixture is smooth and bubbly, about 2 minutes.
  2. Add Milk and Season:
    • Gradually whisk in the warmed milk, continuing to whisk until the sauce thickens and comes to a simmer. Add a pinch of nutmeg, and season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes, then remove from heat.

Assembling the Lasagna:

  1. Preheat Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare Ricotta Mixture:
    • In a small bowl, combine the ricotta cheese with the beaten egg and mix well.
  3. Layer the Ingredients:
    • Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13-inch baking dish. Place a layer of lasagna noodles over the sauce. Spread a third of the ricotta mixture over the noodles, followed by a third of the béchamel sauce, and then a third of the meat sauce. Sprinkle a third of the shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese over the meat sauce. Repeat these layers two more times, ending with a final layer of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  4. Bake the Lasagna:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 25 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  5. Rest and Serve:
    • Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
  6. Enjoy:
    • Serve this delicious lasagna with a simple green salad and a glass of red wine for an unforgettable Italian meal.
