Jhol Momo is a popular Nepali dish featuring steamed dumplings served in a flavorful soup. This dish combines the deliciousness of momos with a rich, aromatic broth. Here’s how to make it:

Ingredients:

For the Dumplings:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • Water (as needed)
  • 300g minced meat (chicken, pork, or beef)
  • 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, minced
  • 2 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped
For the Soup (Jhol):
  • 2 large tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece ginger, minced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 green chilies, slit
  • Salt, to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped for garnish
  • Green onions, chopped for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and enough water to form a smooth and elastic dough.
    • Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes, then cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large bowl, combine the minced meat, chopped cabbage, onion, garlic, ginger, green chilies, soy sauce, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined.
  3. Make the Dumplings:
    • Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a walnut.
    • Roll each ball into a thin disc, about 3 inches in diameter.
    • Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each disc.
    • Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and pinch to seal, forming a pleated dumpling shape.
    • Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
  4. Steam the Dumplings:
    • Arrange the dumplings in a steamer basket, making sure they are not touching each other.
    • Steam the dumplings over boiling water for about 10-15 minutes, or until the dough is cooked and the filling is heated through.
  5. Prepare the Soup (Jhol):
    • In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
    • Add the fenugreek seeds and let them splutter.
    • Add the finely chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
    • Add the chopped tomatoes, ground turmeric, ground cumin, and ground coriander. Cook until the tomatoes break down into a sauce.
    • Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth and bring to a boil.
    • Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for about 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
    • Season with salt to taste.
  6. Assemble the Jhol Momo:
    • Divide the steamed dumplings among serving bowls.
    • Ladle the hot soup over the dumplings.
    • Garnish with fresh cilantro and green onions.

Enjoy your Jhol Momo, a delicious and comforting Nepali dish that’s perfect for any occasion!
