Irish Soda Bread is a classic and easy-to-make bread that has been a staple in Irish households for generations. Made without yeast, this quick bread uses baking soda as the leavening agent, giving it a unique texture and flavor. Here’s how to make this beloved Irish bread at home.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:
    • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease and flour a baking sheet.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
    • Make a well in the center and gradually pour in the buttermilk. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together.
  3. Knead the Dough:
    • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1-2 minutes, just until smooth. Do not over-knead.
  4. Shape the Bread:
    • Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Use a sharp knife to cut a deep cross into the top of the dough. This helps the bread cook evenly and also has a traditional significance.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. You can also check if it’s done by inserting a skewer into the center; it should come out clean.
  6. Cool and Serve:
    • Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve warm with butter and jam.

This traditional Irish Soda Bread is perfect for breakfast or as a side with soups and stews. Its slightly tangy flavor from the buttermilk and the crunchy crust make it a delightful addition to any meal.
