Silltårta, or Herring Cake, is a unique and flavorful Swedish dish often served during midsummer celebrations and other festive occasions. Ingredients:

  • For the Base:
    • 6 slices of rye bread, crusts removed
    • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • For the Filling:
    • 4 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
    • 300 g (10 oz) pickled herring, chopped
    • 4 medium potatoes, boiled and diced
    • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
    • 1/4 cup fresh dill, chopped
    • 1 cup sour cream
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Garnish:
    • Sliced radishes
    • Fresh dill sprigs
    • Lemon slices
    • Caviar (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Base:
    • Grease a springform pan with butter.
    • Press the rye bread slices into the bottom of the pan to form an even base. Spread softened butter over the bread.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped hard-boiled eggs, chopped pickled herring, boiled and diced potatoes, finely chopped red onion, and chopped fresh dill.
    • In a separate bowl, mix together the sour cream, mayonnaise, and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Add the creamy mixture to the herring mixture and stir until well combined.
  3. Assemble the Silltårta:
    • Spoon the herring mixture over the rye bread base in the springform pan. Spread it out evenly.
    • Cover the pan with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to allow the flavors to meld together.
  4. Garnish and Serve:
    • Before serving, carefully remove the springform pan ring.
    • Garnish the top of the Silltårta with sliced radishes, fresh dill sprigs, lemon slices, and caviar if desired.
    • Cut into slices and serve cold.
