Mince and Tatties is a comforting and hearty dish that is a staple in many Scottish households. This simple yet flavorful dish consists of minced beef cooked with onions and carrots, served over creamy mashed potatoes. It’s a perfect example of traditional Scottish comfort food.

Ingredients:

  • 500g (1.1 lbs) minced beef
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large carrots, diced
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef stock
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and diced (for the mash)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for the mash)
  • 1/4 cup milk (for the mash)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mince:
    • In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and diced carrots, cooking until they are softened.
    • Add the minced beef to the pot, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned.
    • Stir in the flour, mixing well, and cook for another 2 minutes to eliminate the raw flour taste.
    • Gradually add the beef stock, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes, until the mixture thickens. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. Prepare the Tatties:
    • While the mince is cooking, boil the diced potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15-20 minutes.
    • Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add the butter and milk, and mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt to taste.
  3. Serve:
    • Serve the mince over a generous portion of mashed potatoes. You can also garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Mince and Tatties is a delicious and warming meal that’s perfect for any time of the year, offering a taste of traditional Scottish home cooking.
