Česnica is a traditional Serbian bread made for Christmas, symbolizing prosperity and good fortune. A coin is often hidden inside the bread, and it is believed that whoever finds it will have good luck in the coming year. Here’s how to make this festive Serbian bread at home.

Ingredients:

  • 500g all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 250ml warm milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 100g unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 coin wrapped in aluminum foil (optional)
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds (for sprinkling)

Instructions:

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm milk. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk and let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy.
  2. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, eggs, and melted butter. Mix until a soft dough forms.
    • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  3. First Rise:
    • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. Shape the Bread:
    • Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Knead it briefly to remove any air bubbles.
    • Flatten the dough slightly and insert the wrapped coin into the dough. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a greased baking sheet.
  5. Second Rise:
    • Cover the loaf with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for another 30 minutes.
  6. Prepare for Baking:
    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
    • In a small bowl, beat the remaining egg and brush it over the top of the loaf. Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  7. Bake the Bread:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. Serve:
    • Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Serve the česnica at your Christmas table, and enjoy the tradition of finding the hidden coin!

Enjoy your homemade Česnica, a festive and symbolic Serbian Christmas bread!
