Köttbullar, or Swedish meatballs, are a classic and beloved dish in Sweden, often served with creamy gravy, lingonberry sauce, and mashed potatoes. These tender meatballs are a staple in Swedish cuisine and are enjoyed by people of all ages. Here’s a traditional recipe to help you make Swedish Köttbullar at home.

Ingredients:

  • For the Meatballs:
    • 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
    • 250 g (0.5 lb) ground pork
    • 1 small onion, finely chopped
    • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
    • 1/2 cup milk
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
    • 2 tablespoons butter (for frying)
  • For the Gravy:
    • 2 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
    • 2 cups beef broth
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For Serving:
    • Lingonberry sauce
    • Mashed potatoes
    • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Meatball Mixture:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, finely chopped onion, bread crumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, and ground allspice. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Shape the Meatballs:
    • Using your hands, shape the mixture into small meatballs, about the size of a walnut.
  3. Cook the Meatballs:
    • In a large frying pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the meatballs in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 10-12 minutes. Remove the meatballs from the pan and set aside.
  4. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same pan, add the butter for the gravy. Once melted, whisk in the flour to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then gradually add the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Stir in the heavy cream and continue to cook until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Combine and Simmer:
    • Return the cooked meatballs to the pan with the gravy. Simmer on low heat for an additional 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the Köttbullar hot, accompanied by lingonberry sauce and mashed potatoes. Garnish with fresh parsley for a touch of color.

Tips for Perfect Köttbullar:

  • Even Browning: Make sure to brown the meatballs evenly by turning them frequently during cooking.
  • Gravy Consistency: Adjust the thickness of the gravy by adding more or less beef broth as needed.
  • Seasoning: Feel free to adjust the seasoning according to your taste. Some prefer a hint more allspice for a spicier kick.

Cultural Significance:

Köttbullar is a cherished dish in Sweden, often enjoyed during family gatherings and special occasions. Its comforting flavors and hearty ingredients make it a favorite among Swedes, symbolizing warmth and togetherness. Sharing a plate of Köttbullar is a way to connect with Swedish heritage and enjoy the simple pleasures of traditional home-cooked food.

Making Swedish Köttbullar at home is a delightful way to experience the heart and soul of Swedish cuisine. These meatballs, with their tender texture and flavorful gravy, are sure to become a beloved dish in your household.
