Irish Apple Cake is a classic dessert that embodies the simplicity and hearty flavors of traditional Irish cuisine. This cake is perfect for any occasion and is often enjoyed with a dollop of whipped cream or a drizzle of custard sauce.

Ingredients:

  • For the Cake:
    • 225g (8 oz) self-raising flour
    • 110g (4 oz) butter, cubed
    • 125g (4.4 oz) sugar
    • 3 large apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
    • 1 egg
    • 75ml (5 tbsp) milk
    • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • For the Topping:
    • 50g (1.8 oz) butter, cubed
    • 75g (2.6 oz) flour
    • 50g (1.8 oz) sugar

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Topping:
    • Rub the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and set aside.
  2. Make the Cake:
    • Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and line a 20cm (8 inch) round cake tin.
    • In a large bowl, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
    • Add the sliced apples to the mixture and toss to coat them in the flour mixture.
    • In a separate bowl, beat the egg and milk together, then add to the apple mixture and stir until well combined.
  3. Assemble and Bake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared cake tin, spreading it out evenly. Sprinkle the topping mixture over the batter.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown and a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  4. Serve:
    • Allow the cake to cool slightly in the tin before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve warm or at room temperature with whipped cream or custard.

This traditional Irish Apple Cake is a delightful dessert that brings together the flavors of sweet apples and warm spices, making it perfect for any occasion.
