Barmbrack, or Báirín Breac, is a traditional Irish bread that is often enjoyed during Halloween. This sweet, fruit-filled bread is typically made with raisins and sultanas soaked in tea, giving it a rich and moist texture. Here’s how you can make this delicious Irish treat at home.

Ingredients:

  • 225g (8 oz) self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon mixed spice
  • 100g (3.5 oz) dark brown sugar
  • 225g (8 oz) mixed dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, currants)
  • 1 egg
  • 250ml (1 cup) cold tea
  • 1 tablespoon whiskey (optional)
  • A ring, coin, or other small charm (wrapped in greaseproof paper, optional)

Instructions:

  1. Soak the Fruit:
    • Place the mixed dried fruit in a bowl and pour over the cold tea and whiskey (if using). Leave to soak overnight or for at least several hours until the fruit has plumped up.
  2. Prepare the Batter:
    • Preheat your oven to 170°C (325°F). Grease and line a loaf tin.
    • In a large mixing bowl, sift together the self-raising flour and mixed spice. Stir in the brown sugar.
    • Make a well in the center and add the soaked fruit along with any remaining liquid, and the beaten egg. Mix well to combine into a thick batter.
  3. Add the Charm (Optional):
    • If including a charm, wrap it securely in greaseproof paper and stir it into the batter.
  4. Bake the Barmbrack:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf tin and smooth the top.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  5. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the barmbrack to cool in the tin for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
    • Serve sliced and spread with butter.

Barmbrack is perfect with a cup of tea and makes a wonderful addition to any festive occasion. Enjoy a slice of this traditional Irish bread and immerse yourself in the flavors of Ireland.
