Churros with chocolate are a beloved Spanish treat, perfect for breakfast or as a sweet snack. These crispy, golden fried dough sticks are served with a rich and velvety chocolate sauce for dipping. Follow this recipe to create authentic churros and chocolate at home.

Ingredients:

For the Churros:

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

For the Chocolate Sauce:

  • 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Making the Churros:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a medium saucepan, combine the water, sugar, salt, and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. Stir in the flour until the mixture forms a ball.
  2. Heat the Oil:
    • In a large, deep skillet or frying pan, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C).
  3. Pipe the Churros:
    • Transfer the dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star tip. Pipe strips of dough into the hot oil, cutting them off with scissors or a knife to the desired length (about 4-6 inches).
  4. Fry the Churros:
    • Fry the churros until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried churros to a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  5. Coat with Sugar:
    • While the churros are still warm, roll them in granulated sugar mixed with ground cinnamon (if using) until evenly coated.

Making the Chocolate Sauce:

  1. Heat the Cream:
    • In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat.
  2. Melt the Chocolate:
    • Place the chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 2 minutes. Add the sugar and vanilla extract, then whisk until smooth and fully combined.

Serving:

  1. Serve Hot:
    • Serve the churros warm with the chocolate sauce on the side for dipping.
