- 1 cup finely chopped cabbage
- 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece ginger, minced
- 2 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh cilantro, chopped
For the Soup (Jhol):
- 2 large tomatoes, chopped
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1-inch piece ginger, minced
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
- 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 green chilies, slit
- Salt, to taste
- Fresh cilantro, chopped for garnish
- Green onions, chopped for garnish
Instructions:
- Prepare the Dough:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and enough water to form a smooth and elastic dough.
- Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes, then cover it with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Prepare the Filling:
- In a large bowl, combine the minced meat, chopped cabbage, onion, garlic, ginger, green chilies, soy sauce, ground cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly combined.
- Make the Dumplings:
- Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a walnut.
- Roll each ball into a thin disc, about 3 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each disc.
- Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and pinch to seal, forming a pleated dumpling shape.
- Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
- Steam the Dumplings:
- Arrange the dumplings in a steamer basket, making sure they are not touching each other.
- Steam the dumplings over boiling water for about 10-15 minutes, or until the dough is cooked and the filling is heated through.
- Prepare the Soup (Jhol):
- In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat.
- Add the fenugreek seeds and let them splutter.
- Add the finely chopped onion, garlic, and ginger. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent.
- Add the chopped tomatoes, ground turmeric, ground cumin, and ground coriander. Cook until the tomatoes break down into a sauce.
- Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth and bring to a boil.
- Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for about 15 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Season with salt to taste.
- Assemble the Jhol Momo:
- Divide the steamed dumplings among serving bowls.
- Ladle the hot soup over the dumplings.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and green onions.
Enjoy your Jhol Momo, a delicious and comforting Nepali dish that’s perfect for any occasion!
